Hear an update on the upcoming National Suicide Prevention Week that will be Sept. 4th – 10th, 2011.

Background

September 4-10, 2011 is national Suicide Prevention week, Commissioner Birkman and Commissioner Covey serve on the Mental Health Task Force for Williamson County which will be hosting a ceremony to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6th, to bring awareness to the issue of mental health and suicide in our county. The ceremony will be held on the Southside steps of the Historic Courthouse in Georgetown, 710 Main Street, at 9:00 a.m. Guest Speaker will be Jeff Curley of Pick with Austin, whose son, Alan Carter Villaruz-Curley lost his battle with depression. For the ceremony there will be 39 teddy bears on display to symbolize the 39 suicides in Williamson County in 2010. At the end of the event, the bears will be donated to the Childrens Advocacy Center, which assists abused children in our area. Following the ceremony on the courthouse steps, anyone interested is also invited to attend Commissioners Court at 9:30 a.m. and a resolution will be presented for adoption by the court declaring it Suicide Prevention Week. A reception with light refreshments will follow.

We will be collecting teddy bears from Aug. 15-29 at all the county EMS stations for the event.
