Discuss and take appropriate action regarding approval of the receipt of a Texas Tobacco Compliance Grant for Pct. Four Constable’s Office.

Background

Constable Precinct Four has received the letter announcing that we have been awarded $9000.00 for Texas Tobacco Compliance Grant starting Sept 1st 2010 - Aug 31st 2011. Request is made to the court to receive the funds for this grant. The notification to the Comptrollers Office must be made by August 11th, 2010.
This is our second consecutive award for this particular grant. The funds are used to make compliance checks to the licensed vendors on the list provided by the Comptrollers Office. The funds also pay for random "stings" to ensure that minor children are unable to make direct purchase of tobacco products from Williamson County sale points. The compliance also ensures that properly posted literature, access to tobacco products, and proper dispension of the products meets Texas standards. The grant also pays for the use of county employees and vehicles to process the stings with in the county, and to make purchases, return forms to the Comptrollers Office, and purchase any surveilance equipment to record any possible buys for prosecution when needed. We have experienced a 36% inspection ratio which means that out of the surveyed locations 36% have been found to be in violation. We want to see that number drop, and feel that this is a good tool to evaluate how the county is progressing to prevent our children from accessing these gateway drugs.
