Discuss, consider, and take appropriate action on appointing a representative to the Regional Affordability Committee.

Background

On January 29, 2015, the Austin City Council approved an ordinance authorizing and approving creation of a Regional Affordability Committee to provide expanded opportunity for transparency, public input, and collaboration between taxing jurisdictions to improve how we serve our community.

The committee’s task is to discuss and solicit public feedback on potential bond elections, opportunities to strengthen partnerships for improved service delivery and to eliminate duplication of services, assess factors impacting the cost of living, and other topics useful for maintaining and promoting affordability.

Council Members Ann Kitchen, Ellen Troxclair, and I have been appointed as City Council representatives to this committee. I am reaching out to you to invite your governmental entity to appoint representation on this committee. We believe that regional collaboration between taxing jurisdictions is critical to a discussion on affordability. We are inviting the following governmental entities to join Austin leaders for this discussion:

• Travis County (2 appointees) and Williamson County (1 appointee)
• School Districts - Austin (2), Del Valle (1), Pflugerville (1), Round Rock (1), and Leander (1)
• Austin Community College (1)
• Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (1)
• Central Health District (1)

I hope you have an interest in participating in this important discussion and will provide the name of your appointee(s) as soon as possible. Current plans are to hold meetings on the third Monday of the month from 3:00 until 6:00 in Austin City Hall’s Boards & Commissions Room, with the first meeting planned for April 20.
