Consider authorizing Spokes 'N Spurs Benefit Bicycle Ride to be held on Saturday, March 8, 2008.

Background

This is the 3rd annual cycling event that is sponsored by Spirit Reins, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which is dedicated to providing hope and healing to at-risk youth and families in crisis. The coordinators of the ride are expecting 800 to 1,000 riders to participate in the event, up from 671 from the previous year. The ride begins at 8:30 AM at the Spirit Reins riding center located at 2055 County Road 284 in Liberty Hill. Riders will be started in intermittent groups to avoid road closure, allowing for three to five minutes per group to begin. The Williamson County's Sheriff's Office has been contacted to enlist the services of two deputies for assistance in starting and traffic control. Other safety considerations taken by the coordinators of the event include: posting signs in the area several days before the ride to notify residents and motorists; enlisting the services of volunteers at every intersection to assist with rider safety and directios; operating "Support and Gear" (SAG) vehicles to assist participants along the route with mechanical troubles or other problems; the Williamson County Amateur Radio Club will provide licensed HAM operators at each rest area and in each SAG vehicle; local law enforcement and emergency services will be contacted to notify of date and route; and, TxDOT Special Projects Coordinator for the Austin District has been contacted to fulfill all requirements of a cycling event of this type.
