Discuss, consider, and take appropriate action on the acceptance of the FEMA Hazard Mitigation funding related to a Fuels Reduction Project at the Williamson County Southwest Regional Park.
Background
Following the Wildfire Season of 2011, FEMA made funding available for hazard mitigation projects for wildfire mitigation. Williamson County Office of Emergency Management in cooperation with the Williamson County Parks Department submitted a project to FEMA for consideration and after multiple environmental assessments the project has been awarded funding. The project will fund the the removal of wildfire fuels along approximately 4 miles of the park perimeter. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of a wildfire from either entering the park and traveling across to neighboring residential areas or a fire started in the park exiting park. This will help protect both residential property and environmentally sensitive areas in the park. Pursuant to the Stafford Act, Williamson County will be responsible for 25% of the project. The total project was originally estimated at $480,000 ($360,000-FEMA and $120,000 County), a current project estimate has not yet been established.
