Consider recognizing Sheriff James Wilson who was selected Sheriff of the Year by the 2008 National Crisis Invervention Team Conference Committee.

Background

Williamson County Sheriff James R. Wilson was selected Sheriff of the Year by the 2008 National Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Conference Committee. Sheriff Wilson will be honored November 5, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia. The nomination categories are representative of outstanding performance of individuals nationwide who have shown exemplary dedication to those suffering from mental illness. The National CIT conference is sponsored by National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), which is well known for their advocacy efforts and collaborations nationwide between law enforcement, mental health professionals, and the mental health community.
Sheriff Wilson has been instrumental with his pioneering ideas and support to law enforcement, the public, and the mental health structure in Williamson County by supporting those with mental illness. Sheriff Wilson has accomplished this by providing programs and services to those in crisis and diverting those who require treatment from incarceration to appropriate programs. Williamson County saved $2,303,400.00 cumulatively from 2006-2008 due to jail diversions. The jail diversions totaled 1,088 people that were served by receiving services in some other manner than in a jail setting.
The Williamson County Crisis Intervention Team officers and staff nominated Sheriff Wilson as Sheriff of the Year because of his outstanding support to the officers and staff of this unit, in addition to the mental health community that he supports. The Crisis Intervention Team provided extensive documentation to support their request that Sheriff Wilson be nominated as Sheriff of the Year. The Sheriff was selected from applications nationwide.
