Consider a resolution proclaiming January 2009 as mentoring month in Williamson County.

Background

WHEREAS, Georgetown Partners In Education was established in 1994 as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization to support the mission of Georgetown I.S.D.; and

WHEREAS PIE’s mission is to create partnerships that will utilize community resources to expand and enhance the traditional educational experience so that all students will be successful: and

WHEREAS, Georgetown PIE is in partnership with Southwestern University, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, the Community at Large and Sun City Retirement Community in efforts to continue to grow our base of volunteers who impact our GISD students on a daily basis; and

WHEREAS, Georgetown PIE’s Project Mentor program served over 960 students during the 2007-2008 school year with volunteers mentoring children on school campuses during school hours for 30 minutes a week; and

WHEREAS, Round Rock I.S.D. as well as Leander I.S.D and other school districts throughout the county have successful mentoring programs; and

WHEREAS, mentoring results in higher self esteem, attendance and improved grades; and

WHEREAS, January is National Mentoring Month

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, County Judge Dan A. Gattis, do hereby proclaim January 2009 as Mentoring Month in Williamson County.
